Top Picks for Electric Vehicles

Okay, okay, we all get it, electric vehicles are all the rage now, and we are all for it. It seems you can’t read an article or scroll through social media without some mention of the environment. Take that paired with the gas prices; it’s no wonder there’s a demand for electric cars. In comparison to how long vehicles have been around, electric ones are relatively young, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t information on what the best electric cars are. We get it, you’re excited and don’t want to break the bank account every time you fuel up, but pump the brakes and read on to learn more about the best options out there for EVs.

When people talk about vehicles with electric motors, whether it’s a compact SUV, crossover, hatchback, or an all-wheel-drive sedan, the first name that comes to mind is Tesla, without any specification of Tesla Model 3, Tesla Model Y, or Tesla Model X. To the fans of electric vehicles, it’s just Tesla. They’ve earned their spot as the most recognizable name in the electric vehicle world, just as Google has made its name for internet search engines. Now, that doesn’t mean there aren’t other options to suit your needs or maybe even knock the Tesla off your list. As we go through the option of best electric vehicles, let’s still pay respect to the OG, Tesla and keep it as an option. It isn’t on every list for no reason.

Ford Mustang Mach-E

For all you beloved classic Mustang fans out there, don’t “shoot” us; we’re just the messenger. We know it isn’t a Mustang as we know it, and that slips us into a state of nostalgia when we see a cherry red 1967 model drive by, but one of the top electric SUVs is made by Ford and named a Mustang (Mach-E). Perhaps the Mustang Mach-E was Ford’s way of paying homage to one of the most memorable vehicles of its time and, through clever marketing, was able to attract the eyes of Mustang lovers and convert them to fans of SUVs. Either way, its sports car feel and design have shot it to the top of the best electric cars on the market.

Admittedly, it’s not the same in power as a Tesla Model X or other electric motors. However, it still comes with all the incredible features we would expect from Ford, especially since it’s the flagship for its electric vehicle line. It may not seem like a big deal for the Mustang Mach-E to come with a touchscreen and CarPlay and Android Auto, but one thing you might not know is that Tesla doesn’t come standard with that option.

If it’s power you are after and are convinced on the modern Mustang, Ford did announce they are coming out with a Mustang Mach-E GT, and anything with GT instantly sends our thoughts to horsepower, and they won’t fail you; upping from 346hp to 460hp and going from 0-60 in 3.8 seconds! Do we have your attention now?

Hyundai Ioniq 5

It seems that Hyundai has more models of vehicles than we do socks in our drawer. If you were asked how many vehicle types they have and answered with “a lot,” you’d be correct. Hyundai currently has over ten model types, so it’s no wonder they have an electric vehicle. Not just any electric vehicle, one of the top globally, the Hyundai Ioniq 5.

Considered an SUV, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 carries a look more comparable to a larger hatchback. Being built on Hyundai Motor Group’s E-GMP dedicated electric vehicle platform, the company could get fancy and creative with its styling. If you’re in the market for a minimalistic design with a high-tech infotainment system, this might be the perfect electric car. With more interior volume than some of its competition, it earns a spot as one of the best family vehicles. Its long-range capabilities of up to 480kms (300 miles) and its affordable starting price keep this vehicle in electric vehicle shoppers’ minds.

According to Road Show by CNET, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 cleaned house at the New York Auto Show awards, winning World Car of the Year, beating out the fellow automakers and their models such as the Kia EV6 and Ford Mustang Mach-E. In addition, this electric Hyundai won the World Electric Car of the Year and the World Car Design award.

Nissan Leaf

For those buyers looking for their new car to be compact with a low purchase price, when compared to others, bump the Nissan Leaf up your list. Although the vehicle is compact, it is still quite roomy and comes with high-tech options, including ProPilot driver assistance. Unlike all makes outside of Tesla, the Nissan Leaf comes standard with a CHAdeMO rapid charger.

The Nissan Leaf isn’t a new EV to the market; it made its first appearance in 2010. Yes, it has advanced since its inception, but one of the downsides to owning a Nissan Leaf is its limited driving range topping out at 234 kms (149 miles). But, if you live in the city and don’t have long commutes, this might be the perfect EV for you. Spoiler alert, there are plans for it to be replaced by the new fully electric Micra crossover SUV.

The World of Tesla

We know, we haven’t mentioned Tesla other than at the beginning, and that doesn’t mean we negate its stake in the electric vehicle world because that would be crazy. Yes, we purposely didn’t put Tesla at the top of this blog; we figured the company is tired of being at the top of everything. #notjoking! In all seriousness, Tesla is the King (or Queen) of electric vehicles, no matter which model you look at. MotorTrend puts the Tesla Model 3 as the top electric car and the Tesla Model S as the second-best for luxury electric vehicles, falling just below the Lucid Air.

BMW iX

The luxury of all electric luxury, the BMW iX. Boasting a similar composition and styling to the BMW x5, this SUV has (dare we say) PIZAZZ? If someone ever told you that electric vehicles don’t have power, we give you full permission to tell them they are wrong! Coming in AWD, sporting dual-motors, the xDrive50 powertrain has a 516-hp, while the M60 has a whopping 610-hp. Yes, we know you’re mind-blown; we were, too.

Sitting at the top for luxury according to Car and Driver, its rivals are the Audi e-Tron, Tesla Model X and new to scene Fisker Ocean and Rivian RIS. But don’t be impressed by the list of vehicles in its class; be impressed by the BMW iX performance that offers up to a 480km (300 mile) drive range with charging capabilities going from 10% to 80% in 35-minutes when connected to a 200-kWh battery connection. You may be able to roll fast on the road in this vehicle, but slow your roll on excitement. This incredible (slightly ostentatious vehicle) comes with a hefty starting price of over $100k. But hey, if you got it, flaunt it.
