Cheapest Electric Vehicle Options in Canada

Buying an electric car, or at least a hybrid or plug-in hybrid (PHEV), is definitely one way to save yourself massive amounts of money with the rising fuel prices. The even better part is getting yourself into a new electric vehicle at a low starting price. As more and more automakers are adding emission-free, electric motor vehicles to their lineup, Canadians are deciding to go electric when purchasing a new car. Gone are the days of only the elite being able to drive an electric vehicle. Between lower price points and incredible government incentives and rebates in, rolling away in an EV is easier than ever. Okay, wait, we stretched that a bit. For some, it may not be that easy. Why? Duh, many dealerships are sold out of electric cars. Well, that's only for those who don't know about FFUN Cars. But why is buying an EV from FFUN Cars easier? UMMM, because we actually have some available and ready to go. See for yourself.

The Difference

No doubt, if you have started researching electric vehicles in Canada, you have come across the terms hybrid, plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHEV), and electric vehicle (EV). For us "car people," we know the difference. Weird #flex, we know. For many people, there can be some confusion, that's why we are here.

Hybrid Vehicle

A hybrid vehicle runs on both gas and an electric motor, where the two work together to move the car. The engine uses gasoline to recharge the battery, which obviously powers the electric motor. Then there's the plug-in hybrid, which also uses a gas and electric motor. The major difference is the PHEV runs on the electric motor, which is charged via a charging station, and will only use gasoline once the battery has completely run out of power.

And, of course, the fully electric vehicle (EV) is obviously the best for the environment with its zero emissions. This type of car runs purely on electricity powered by a battery.

Cheapest Electric Car Options

Okay, we know you're thinking, cut to the chase on what the cheapest electric vehicles in Canada are. As always, we can't mention electric vehicles without mentioning Tesla. Although Tesla isn't on the list of some of the most affordable options, if it's Tesla you are after and want value, the Tesla Model 3 is the automaker's cheapest model. Onto the list of electric vehicles that have a starting price of less than $45k MSRP.

Hyundai IONIQ 5

First up for cost-effective electric vehicles is the Hyundai IONIQ 5, a hatchback that offers an incredible acceleration rate of 1-100km in 5.1 seconds and comes with Hyundai SmartSense safety features. Available in Hybrid, EV, and PHEV, the options are endless. The Hyundai IONIQ electric qualifies for the federal rebate of $5000 and in some provinces, the provincial one of $3000, adding to your savings.

Hyundai Kona Electric

The Hyundai Kona Electric is a subcompact crossover with a driving range of 415kms. It has the same federal and provincial rebates as the Hyundai IONIQ. Loaded with features such as a heated steering wheel, ventilated seats, Infinity sound system, and wireless smartphone charging, this electric vehicle gives you lots of bang for your buck. We can't forget to mention you can charge the battery up to 80% on a fast-charging station in less than an hour.

Kia Niro EV

Kia has been popping up on multiple lists, including the Kia Niro EV being named by J.D. Power as the #1 Ownership Experience for electric vehicles. The Niro is considered an SUV with a hatchback body style and comes in EV, PHEV, and conventional gas. The EV version has an electric range of up to 385kms, ideal for long commutes. According to Driving.ca, the yearly "fuel" cost for the PHEV trim is $753, while the EV will only cost (on average in electricity) $484/year.

Nissan Leaf

Unlike many manufacturers that offer vehicles in both EV and gas, the Nissan Leaf is only available in an electric option. Running on a 40kWh battery and offering 147 horsepower, the Leaf has a driving range of 147kms. At the same time, the Leaf S Plus can get up to 360km, making the two variations perfect for city driving.

Chevrolet Bolt EV

Like the Nissan Leaf, the Chevrolet Bolt is also only available in an electric motor option and provides 417kms of driving range. Not to mention 145kms of range can be added at a fast-charge station in just 30 minutes.

There you have it, a list of some of the most affordable electric vehicles on the market. Many top brands such as Volkswagen, Ford, Toyota, and Mitsubishi also offer well-priced electric vehicles. If you want electric and consider yourself a bougie person, more upscale EVs are available from automakers like BMW, Audi, and Volvo. No judgement over here; whatever your vehicle preference is, we probably have it.

We know the out-of-control gas prices and insane government rebates on electric vehicles are pushing you toward EVs. But are you one of those people who get excited about buying a car and then remember you have to deal with the hassle of visiting a dealership? We have a solution! Us, FFUN Cars, that's right! We don't have pushy salespeople or dealerships. We have vehicles, and lots of them, available for you to look at any time, anywhere, 100% online or in-store.

You may be thanking us, but the dealership people aren't. Just because we aren't shoving information down your throat doesn't mean we don't want to talk to you. We like the "leave you alone" approach where you can browse vehicles, enjoy a 360° virtual tour, review the warranty on the cars you like, and even complete the transaction alone but only if you want, cause we’d also like to see you in-person. It’s all about you and your convenience. So come on over!
